Juniper Networks [NYSE: JNPR]: Converging Networks through Innovation

CIO VendorRami Rahim, CEO Today, organizations want to architect their networks in accordance with the connectivity and service requirements of a wide range of increasingly dynamic applications. To do that, they need the network to be policy-driven, programmable, scalable, and automated. But the traditional way of implementing networking and services in hardware makes networks static, rigid, manual, and unable to respond to application requirement changes rapidly. Software defined networking (SDN) has evolved from being the efficient new technology loved by network enthusiasts to a key feature in new techniques designed to simplify and automate network configuration and service management.

To realize the true potential of SDN, enterprises need a strategy that ensures freedom of choice so their network can evolve over time without being locked into legacy systems. Juniper Networks [NYSE:JNPR] has compiled a broad portfolio of products that delivers leading SDN solutions separating the network’s brains and brawn, enabling firms’ to take a centralized network view for more efficient orchestration and automation. By unchaining the network from its inflexible past, the businesses can lower their total cost of ownership, accelerate time to market, and scale up and down to meet changing market demands.

Juniper is providing open SDN solutions for cloud and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) to improve business agility with security, availability, performance, automation and elasticity. “Every innovation we envision, every technology we create is driven by our desire to help solve our customers’ toughest challenges so they can compete and thrive today and into the future,” says Rami Rahim, CEO, Juniper Networks.

Agility without Limits through Cloud Network Automation

Juniper delivers production-ready SDN solutions covering multiple use cases and spanning multiple network domains. No rip and replace of existing infrastructure is required, making it easy for organizations to get all of the advantages of SDN while protecting their existing networking investments. The users can avoid expensive vendor lock-in with an open architecture that interoperates with a wide range of networking and service options: physical or virtual; implemented in hardware or software; Juniper or third party. This empowers users to choose best-in-class building blocks for their SDN solution with seamless integration of multivendor solutions in physical or virtual format through open, proven standards and an open ecosystem.

Juniper SDN solution is based on scale-out distributed software that is highly available, always-on, and elastic, as well as Network Equipment Building System (NEBS)-compliant for service provider deployments in various scenarios. Enhanced security integrated with cloud platforms ensures robust security with perimeter - and hypervisor-level security that uses open source for transparency.

We remain constructive on fiscal 2016 and expect growth from new products to contribute to our topline, coupled with our ongoing focus on cost discipline to drive non-GAAP operating margin expansion for the full year

Juniper SDN solution also ensures that users can elastically scale services up and down, scale their network infrastructure beyond data center and cloud boundaries, and scale software out to meet any control and management demands.

Open SDN, NFV and Cloud Solutions

Juniper’s Contrail—an open-standard proactive overlay SDN solution works with a firm’s existing physical network devices, helping address the networking challenges for self-service, automated, and vertically integrated cloud architecture and improving the scalability and CapEx inefficiencies through a proactive overlay virtual network. All of the networking features such as switching, routing, security, and load balancing are moved from the physical hardware infrastructure to software running in the hypervisor kernel that is managed from a central orchestration system. The Contrail system also solves the agility problem by providing all of the automation for provisioning of the virtualized network, networking services, and integration with cloud orchestration systems such as OpenStack and CloudStack using REST APIs.

Contrail delivers freedom of choice, intelligent automation and always-on reliability for cloud and NFV through Contrail Networking and Contrail Cloud Platform.

Contrail Networking is future-proof for the cloud era with the open SDN solution for cloud and NFV that improves business agility with predictable security, high availability, high performance, automation, and elasticity. It is a simple, open, and agile SDN solution that automates and orchestrates the creation of highly scalable virtual networks. On the other hand, Contrail Cloud Platform is a foundational element of Juniper's open cloud networking and NFV solutions. It combines the automation capabilities of Contrail Networking with Juniper’s OpenStack distribution, providing a turnkey cloud orchestration platform for creating, scaling, and seamlessly joining open, intelligent, and reliable OpenStack clouds through intelligent and secure networks.

In an instance, Orange Business Services—a global IT and communications services provider who maintains a close relationship with its customers, found that many of the SMB customers were looking for greater agility from their network services. Orange Business Services chose to partner with Juniper because of its proven, open technology, a strong track record in delivering innovative virtualized networks, and a shared vision for SDN. Orange Business Service’s new Easy Go Network is driven by MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers, Contrail Controller, and the vSRX virtual firewall. The Easy Go Network enables customers to turn on new services in minutes, using a self-service portal. As a result the time-to-market has been reduced, and operational costs of service automation and virtualization have been reduced.
The new platform also helps Orange Business Services develop new SMB and international markets.

New Levels of Control and Visibility

The company is also automating the creation of traffic-engineering paths across the network, increasing network utilization, and enabling a customized programmable networking experience through NorthStar traffic optimization WAN SDN controller. With the power of Junos OS, WANDL optimization algorithms, and transport abstraction, NorthStar Controller enables efficient design, bringing new levels of control, and visibility that help users avoid costly over provisioning.

"As a challenger in this industry, we plan to remain nimble, anticipate and deliver what our customers require for network innovation, and continue our relentless focus on execution to maximize long-term value for our shareholders"

On the other hand Juniper also provides WANDL IP/ MPLSView—a multivendor, multiprotocol, and multilayer operations support systems (OSS) traffic management and engineering solution for IP and MPLS networks. Juniper’s WANDL IP/MPLSView is distinguished by its attention to detailed routing protocol behavior, an extensive multivendor library, and scalability and performance for networks up to thousands of routers. The integrated software suite has traffic engineering models for exhaustive single and concurrent device failures, traffic matrix estimation, MPLS diverse path design, fast reroute design, network optimization, and more.

Securing Entire Networks

As the scale and sophistication of threats continues to increase, next-generation security must be built around automated and actionable intelligence that can be shared quickly to reduce risk, protecting the network and its users. Juniper’s Software- Defined Secure Network is giving end-to-end network visibility that secures the entire network—physical and virtual of an organization. It leverages cloud economics to find and stop threats faster.

The company delivers building blocks for the Software Defined Secure Network (SDSN) that combine policy, detection, and enforcement with a comprehensive suite of products that centralizes and automates security. Juniper recently announced several breakthrough additions to its cloud and virtualized service offerings as part of its SDSN framework. These enhancements include a new compact and containerized virtual firewall called Juniper Networks cSRX, a next-generation firewall providing advanced security services for SDN, as well as a multi-core version of the Juniper Networks vSRX, the industry's fastest virtual firewall that is expected to be capable of reaching 100 Gigabits per second (Gbps). This speed is 10 times greater than the nearest competitor and creates new possibilities for using agile and flexible virtual firewalls.

“As a challenger in this industry, we plan to remain nimble, anticipate, and deliver what our customers require for network innovation, and continue our relentless focus on execution to maximize long-term value for our shareholders,” asserts Rahim. “We remain constructive on fiscal 2016 and expect growth from new products to contribute to our topline, coupled with our ongoing focus on cost discipline to drive non-GAAP operating margin expansion for the full year.” Juniper aims to continue offering high-performance network solutions to help service providers, enterprises and the public sector creating value and accelerating success.
